Cure SR20 VCT sprocket rattle through software/firmware...

Yes, I know, it sounds like a typical internet scam :D but it seems so ridiculously easy and cheap compared to forking out for a new sprocket for £300+, and having it fail a year or two later!

This is what I did earlier. Warm engine (90 degrees oil temp) it starts rattling like its about to die.

(I got excited and pressed it on/off quite fast towards the end)

So... surely I'm not the first person to discover this?

So what I propose tonight, is a microswitch mounted on the TB so that whenever it is closed (ie, idle) it closes the earth circuit to the VCT solenoid and activates it. As you can see from the video, there doesnt seem to be any ill effects.

I will have a microswitch rigged up later tonight and will post up my results :)

I will also suggest a change to the Nistune ROM (?) that allow full control of VCT without there having to be a minimum load, I just cant seem to map it in using the tables provided! It appears that even when you put everything as low as possible for activation, it still wont do anything until you give it some load, like a sharp throttle kick, or putting it in gear and holding it on the clutch.

Is this possible Matt?

Cheers

Well my microswitch works pretty well. It only rattles on hot start-up for a few seconds.

But if we could have it through software it would be SO much neater.

Matt? Any comment? is this possible, or is it limitations on the ECU firmware?

Anything in addition to current ECU firmware would have to be custom modified. If there is a minimum TP (load) parameter for TP then I'm not aware of it. I only have seen minimum RPM trigger in the code

From what Immy21 said a while back on SXOC, and my own findings...

You can set the VTC to come in at any rpm/load you like, BUT it still needs the idle (throttle closed) indicator to be off, and it also needs the neutral indicator to be off.

I suppose changing this in the firmware would be too much work? :(
