MAF Insert Information and Links

Two different “slot style” sensors are currently being used. Both work great and are fully supported in NIStune with selection from the drop-down MAF list. Both can be used in either “suck-thru” or “blo-thru” configuration. Same physical size so they’re effectively interchangeable, although they do use different connectors. They both require a suitable housing and at present there are various diameter alloy housings available ready-to-go or you can buy a “bung” which is an alloy adaptor which can be welded onto your own alloy pipe. Only available in aluminium at present.

OEM Nissan sensor
Part number 22680-7S000. This is used on most current Nissan engines. Commonly referred to as the R35 GTR sensor but they’re actually used on everything from the GTR to the VK56 powered trucks and down to the lowly Tiida 4 cylinder. Nissan simply adjust the housing diameter to give them the required airflow range for the different engine sizes. Larger engines often use twin sensors. They’re good for around the same horsepower range as the Z32 MAF in a similar diameter housing but this can be adjusted by using different diameter housings. Beware of fake sensors. No horror stories yet, but there are Chinese fakes out there. Connectors are not currently available so the only option is to source used connectors from wrecks.

PMAS “HPX” sensor
These are a custom sensor developed by Precision Mass Airflow Sensors in USA. More expensive than the Nissan sensor but good for big horsepower. New connectors are available for these and they come with a generous length of wire attached. More details below.

Given that we like using the R35/HPX MAF inserts over Z32 MAFs these days and are strongly recommending workshops and customers do the same, below are links to where to get them and prices

R35 GTR sensor
From NZEFI: As a general rule, with this sensor a typical 3″ alloy tube (with internal diameter of 72.5mm) will support up to 350hp and 3.5″ alloy tube (with internal internal diameter of 85mm) will support up to 500hp. We’ve tested 4″ alloy tubes to over 600hp.

Allumunium bungs are welded to intercooler or intake piping depending on size. Using 3" and under only bung required. Use straightener for 3.5" - 4" tubing for airflow stability. Only install in a straight section of pipe (not on curves). Allow at least 1-2" straight tubing on each side of pipe. If installing in intake then ensure far enough from turbo (after bend) and use a recirculating BOV. Return from BOV should point away from MAF to avoid reversion.
