I wonder what your bench was doing, since it was obviously not reflecting reality.
How did you test this?

First thing was that VTC based on TP was eradicated
then the recent mixup with CUT / ENABLE (formerly known as RECOVER).

Maybe your bench setup is faulty?

Temperature 85 degC, fixed load point and RPMs increase. The VTC light will switch off and then on recovery after about 200rpm re-enable again. However romchip has indicated this is due to the hysteresis used in the code
