Getting off knock maps + resetting ECU

Post by Junkie »

A few questions about how the standard ECUs work (type 2 if it matters)
- How does the ECU get back to the standard map if the knock has gone away? At engine start? At ECU "reset"?
- What does resetting the ECU (cutting all power to it) actually do? That is, what settings are contained in volatile memory?
- Does the ECU have any non-volatile memory? If so, what is stored in that?

Thanks!

On my testing so far it has been on ECU power cut ("reset") but havent actually tried to see if leaving ignition on and restarting would reset to normal maps (havent tried this but would doubt it)

Cutting ECU power would reset everything in volalike memory apart from anything backed up by battery power wire which goes into the ECU

It doesnt have any non-volatile memory except for later models with NATS (to keep key codes inside 93Cxx chip). Battery backed up parts of the memory keep things like persistent fault codes and Alpha trim values. Not sure what else is kept apart from those things

Thanks Matt. Seat of the pants dyno says that re-applying the same tune seems to put you back on the standard map as well.
