VTC sol not activating *Fixed*

Post by slowpoke2006 »

I have a problem with the VTC sol not switching on and I'm not sure why i went through the mapping guide about it but not sure if i'm missing something or not. I have the BD679 Darlington Transistor installed on the fuel pump idle control just like the guild showed. I have everything else working right. Not sure if a bad transistor will cause it not to switch or not, or if there is something else going on? its an rb20det 23710-11U00 ecu used on a rb25det

I still haven't been able to get it to trigger at any load or rpm. All of the settings for it are what was loaded in the file for it and I can pull up my fuel tables and it shows the area it should be activating in. Not sure it activates the flag when current flows or if it should still trigger even if no current is flowing over the silonid based of a set registry value. I'll look to night to see if there is a way to manualy turn it on and off somewhere in nistune.

Was the board programmed for VCT? There is regular 11U0F for R32 (no VCT) and 11U0F for RB25 (VCT and TPS idle control)

VCT comes in two flavours (LED output and fuel pump output). Check which version was put on your board

Also the VCT indicator should illuminate when it is active (during live driving, but should also log)

It should be using the fuel pump idle you sent me the transistor that was needed to make it work. The board says 110UF FPI cant tell if it says VCC or VTC then Rb25. Ill post an image in a sec. but I am using the feature pack for the rb25 bin its HCR32_FOR_RB25_11U0F_MT_TPS_VCT_FP_maps.bin

Also here is the bin and log that i took. I captured most everything except battery voltage and control flags 3 and 4 i did save and rename the ecu file. at 14:04 is where i do a pull from 1300rpm to 7000.
Edit:
Ok plugged the ecu back in and connected the laptop re loaded the bin file to the ecu with the default settings and started the car up and the VTC was lit up while idling. Let it warm up and went for a test drive and it just stayed activated. I turn on the logger and as soon as i hit the record button the light turns off and wont come back on. When i hit record all of the indicators like tps idle, egr sol, start sw, they all gray out for a second then come back on. I get back home and stop and save the recording and close the log view and the VTC sol light comes on and i'm able to rev the motor and get it to come on and go off. A few times after revving the motor it would also stay on at idle but if i revved it up again when i came back to idle it would turn off like it should. Ill have to make a test light out of a resistor and an led to know if the actual solenoid is turning on and off. I could put my multi-meter on it but i think a flashing light would be easier to see while sitting in the car trying to watch the laptop also.

Edit 2:
Well I'm not getting anything to the silonoid. Started it up VTC was off reved some didnt come on so i dropped the temp for it to enable to the lowest and the light comes on on the computer go to burn them and its out of synce so reload maps to ecu and burn. It look as its working right hook up test light and nothing. open up consult log view hit record and the consult view indicators gray out then come back on and VTC is no longer showing its activating when revving. I also tried activating it in the self test and nothing there. Not really sure where to go from here as far as nistune and the board, but i will get a wireing diagram and do a continuity test on the wires that go to the VTC silonid to make sure they are connected right and there are no breaks in the wires. Then the last thing that i know i can check is the transistor by pulling it and testing it with my DMM.

Edit 3:
Pulled the ecu checked pin 113 to vtc plug its good. but the other side that should have 12v has nothing with the ignition on. with ignition off it has continuity with ground. It is a wiring specialist harness so I'm not 100% sure if it is wired the exact same way as a stock harness is or not I will contact them to see if they can give me any information about back tracking the wire to find out what is going on with it.

VFC RB25 marked on the board has the correct firmware for VTC variable fuel output. This is fine

VTC is triggered from the minimum load (TP) which is 24 from factory (with a hysterysis of about 10 between disable/reenable). To turn it off when idling, increase the minimum TP value higher to avoid it.

Edit 1: Okay when you hit record in the logger, it changes Nistune from 'tuner mode' to 'stream mode'. Earlier versions of the firmware would not update the VTC consult display state in stream mode. This is why your log does not show it being enabled/disabled in the log. You can change the mode to 'tuner mode' to record the VTC state after you hit the record button

Edit 3: Okay you should have 12V with the ignition on to the VTC solenoid, not going to ground. Check with Wiring Specialities about this since 113 pulls the line low and the other side being 12V will enable the solenoid

Ok thanks ill increase the min tp load for the vtc to fix that. I have emailed them. also i got a factory wiring diagram that I'm going to check it with in hopes that it would be wired the same as factory on the engine harness. It will probably be next weekend before i can put much time to tracking it down tho. At least it lets me know the board is working like it should. Ill post back when i find out why I'm not getting 12v in case anyone else run into this problem.

Damn i figured it out after pulling half my wiring apart. I was a fuse that was missing. Guess its been gone since i bought the car. Not sure how my 02 sensor has been working as it wasn't getting 12v( not sure if the 12v is just for the heater) my aac valve and my VCT were not getting 12v. That would probably explain the weird idle loop it was doing. I have been slowly going through the whole car and trying to fix everything the way it should have been done. Now just to tape everything back up and re loom it fun stuff. Live and learn. It didn't help non that the one wiring diagram i had showed it being powered by the eccs relay. I found another diagram that showed it coming from fuse tided to the ignition switch. which made me think out the two fuse spots that were open and i stuck a 5 amp fuse in one an bam 12v to acc vct and 02.

edit 1:

Got it all put back together and everything in working just fine. Idles much better with an occasional hiccup not sure what is causing that but i will find it.
Now that i know what was happening to vct when i went to logging I'm loving nistune. Everything that was wrong was cause i didn't know what was going on in the software or was actually something wrong with the motor/car and not nistune. I will recommend this to anyone that has a car y'all support.
