Why is my car Retarded?

Post by djstatic »

Basically my car runs like crap when it's cold. I've put up with it for over 2 years (original post)
Car:
R33 Skyline Series 1.5

Mods:
Nistune'd RB20 ECU running E85
Laggy Garrett T04 Turbo
600 x 300 x 76mm FMIC
Turbotech Manual Boost Controller (set to 22psi)
Walbro 255Lph Fuel pump
3" Turbo back SS Exhaust
Apexi Pod filter
Autobahn88 hard suction kit
Q45 Throttle body
Forward facing plenum
Z32 MAF
800cc top feed injectors
Turbosmart FPR
Splitfire coil packs

I logged my drive home from work. From what I can tell it gets stuck on 7 deg until the coolant temp hits 65c

I appreciate any assistance you can offer.

RB20 (and other) ECU's have a warmup timing table. You'll see it's got 7 degrees in it. Change all the 7's to whatever timing you want and she'll be sweet.

I assume you have the VCT either hardwired to 12V or have some sort of controller for it? Cos VCT left uncontrolled will mean that the intake cam is always retarded and this will make everything very sluggish.

DUDE! It's the wild west. I'm positive the VCT is not controlled. My Nistune story is:
Drive to Matt's house
Matt does his thing
Plug in
Pray
Start car
Drive home
Next day, Drive to "Turbo Tune" (man I wish I could take this decision back! and the $600!)

What's the actual name of that table, and what should the values be? I have NFI in regards to Tuning.

Maybe I should be asking where are you at, and what do you charge? lol

I don't have NIStune here at work but I'm pretty sure it's just "Warmup Timing". Easy to spot - it's the one with all the 7's in it!

For VCT just find the VCT mechanism and work out which wire is which. One will be 12V when IGN is on. The other will normally be controlled by the ECU. It will pull it to GND to activate. So you just snip this one (sorry I don't have colours) and connect it (the VCT solenoid side) to GND. Mr. Nissan has kindly put a GND lug right next to the VCT solenoid, so crimp a lug onto your wire and bolt it on with the existing GNDs. It'll transform the car. You'll lose about 10kw at the top of the rev range but make massive gains everywhere else.

Or just take it to Jaustech and get young Anthony to sort it. 1/2 hour job. Bit more if you want him to run it up on the dyno and check the tune (highly recommended).

Yeah I just check it out (I normally don't have NisTune at work either).

There was no indication that the car was accessing that chart (it's not green) and also when the car comes good (after 65c and when the timing is good) that chart is still active as the rpm changes.

So how do you know when it's being accessed? and if the answer is all the time.. why is it different after the 65c?

That's a big dunno on that one. Matt's got most of the active map highlighting sorted but there may still be some holes. Just change all the 7's to 20's and see if you read 20 degrees during warmup instead of 7.

and what timing will I get once it hits 65c? lol

Going to buy a rpm window switch (damn they're expensive)

I wish I know about Z32 ecu and VCT before I bought the RB20 ECU

Once it's warmed up it'll jump to the main timing maps.

RB20 is a good ECU for this. Simple and easy to tune. Stick with it.

What part of $50 is expensive? ;)

Shipping/time

I go to the US about 5 times a year. Probably won't be heading over for a few months (summit still charge like $10-15 to ship to small items to IL or CA).

That unit is much sexier than this so I'll buy it.

Under bonnet, cops are going to go nuts when they see that! lol

ya know, I'm contemplating just buying some drop in series 2 Tomei pon cams. (I have the other adjustable intake cam gear just sitting here doing nothing. lol)

That looks pretty much exactly how I did my last one and the customer was happy.

Cams = always good.

Poncams = even better. Big fan of them.

It gets that lean that it almost stalls near the start of the run, as I'm backing out of a car parking space.

The knock sensor got a few hits. Can that be from the near stalling? it blips later too.

You may have noticed that the DLP IO8 spazzes out as well. Not sure about that purchase either (I thought they were solid).

Make sure you are using the latest FTDI drivers with the DLP since earlier versions of the drivers dont work well and cause freeze ups
